, “We feel proud as health workers for this success story”. These are the words of Health workers of Apinto Government Hospital in Tarkwa who successfully delivered a pregnant COVID-19 client.
The baby has subsequently tested negative to COVID-19.
The mother of the baby Mansah, (not her real name) tested positive to COVID-9 after her sample was taken to the lab during her 8th month of pregnancy.
After testing positive, she was taken to the isolation centre for treatment in Tarkwa where she is being managed.
On the night of Friday 15th May, Mansah began experiencing labour pains which caught the attention of health workers of the Apinto Government hospital. A message was quickly sent to front-liners who assembled to deliver her.
Midwives did their best to get her to deliver naturally but were unable to do that. She was later taken to the theatre where she was operated successfully to have the baby removed.

The success story of Apinto Hospital is the first in the western region and second in Ghana after the University of Ghana Medical School had a similar case.
As at 29th April 2020 when she was admitted at the COVID centre, her pregnancy was 39 weeks and 1 day old, meaning that she could give birth any time.
This was Mansah’s first pregnancy, health workers had all their attentions on her, taking into consideration, her situation.
All efforts to have Mansah transferred to a higher hospital for surgical intervention during delivery proved futile.
This energized health workers of Apinto to master the courage to marshal all the necessary instruments and precautionary measures to deliver her safely.
A senior staff mid wife at Apinto hospital, Esther Annor in an interview with westernghnews.com said, Mansah came to the COVID centre at term and that gave her a responsibility to make sure Mansah went through the delivery process safe.
The hope of the midwife Esther Annor was to get Mansah to have a vaginal birth. But along the line, she had to be sent to the theatre for caesarian section because of the difficulties she was going through during the process.
The surgery lasted for one hour thirty minutes and the baby was safely delivered.
The head of the theatre at Apinto government hospital, Nocholas Addai said the delivery has boosted their morale as health workers as this is the first in the region. He is hopeful that if they face another challenge like this they will overcome.
The head of the Rapid response team for COVID-19 in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality and the head of clinicals at the Apinto government hospital in Tarkwa Dr Joseph Darko who led the team of doctors to deliver the woman of the baby said the delivery process was not normal.
He said the mother has subsequently tested negative and awaiting another negative test to be declared recovered from COVID-19.
