Be alert, not to contract COVID-19 – UMaT Vice Chancellor to final year students

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Prof Jerry S. Y Kuma has appealed to final year students of the university to be alert in order not to contract covid-19 in their short stay on campus.

Final year students of all tertiary institutions in Ghana resumed on Monday 15th June 2020 to complete their exit examination.

At short ceremony to welcome the students, Prof Kuma said, the university has put all the necessary precautionary measures in place to ensure that no student is infected with the virus after the completion of their exams on campus.
He said veronica buckets and soaps have been placed at all entry points to the university and all lecture halls, where every student is expected to wash the hands before entering.

Infrared thermometer guns have also been kept at security check points to check temperatures of members of the university community – lecturers, students and admin staff. Additionally, each student will get three nose masks and a bottle of sanitizer, to be supplied by the University.

Prof. Kuma urged students not to be rude to security men when they are asked to check their temperatures. He cautioned every student to strictly adhere to these protocols including social distancing, the use of face masks and alcohol-based hand sanitizer, so that they can go home physically and medically strong after their short stay on campus.

“Social distancing should not be practiced only at the lecture halls or gatherings, but also at the various halls of residence and while walking with colleagues. This is because some people may have the virus, but because they are asymptomatic, it will be difficult to notice,” Prof. Kuma stated.

Prof Kuma disclosed that, the Gold Refinery Hall of the University has been prepared as a holding center, so that in case one contracts the virus, the person will be safely kept there.

As part of the welcome ceremony for the final years, the Head of the Rapid Response Team in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, Dr Joseph Darko was invited to throw more light on the virus and what students have to do to stay safe within their period of stay.

He commended the university for putting a place in shape for an isolation center and other precautionary measures put in place to ensure that students are safe.

He urged University authorities to write names of all students during lectures everyday in order to help in contact tracing, in the case of any eventuality.

The Public Health Nurse of Apinto Government Hospital, Mrs Sabina Tannoh sensitized the student not to stigmatize anyone infected with covid-19 because it is a respecter of no person.

She charged the student to begin sensitizing their friends and families against stigmatization. By so doing it will reduce the stigma rate in society.
