Goldfields Ghana donates two ambulances to Tarkwa Municipal and Apinto Government Hospitals

Goldfields Ghana has donated two ambulances to the Tarkwa Municipal and the Apinto Government hospitals at a cost of Two Hundred and Forty Eight Thousand dollars.

This forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibilities towards healthcare in the Prestea Huni and Tarkwa Nusaem Municipalities where the company operates.

At a ceremony to hand over the ambulances, the General Manager for Goldfields, Tarkwa Mine, Mr Stephen Osei-Bempah said, during the sod-cutting ceremony of the reconstruction of the Tarkwa and Abosso (TNA) Park into an international standard stadium on 19 February 2019, the MP, Hon. George Mireku Duker made an appeal to Gold Fields to assist the Municipal Health Directorate with an ambulance to aid healthcare delivery.

Mr Alfred Baku, the Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields West Africa pledged, on behalf of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, to donate not one, but two ambulances to the two government hospitals in Tarkwa.

In Tarkwa, the Foundation has made contributions towards improving healthcare which include the construction of a maternity block at the Apinto Government Hospital, renovation of the Tarkwa Midwifery School and the construction of health centres at Huniso and New Atuabo.

“In line with Gold Fields’ value of integrity, we are here today, honouring the promise that was made last year”, Mr Osei Bempa added.

Recountings some of the  company’s contribution towards healthcare, Mr Stephen Osei-Bempah said, “the Foundation has made contributions towards improving healthcare which include the construction of a maternity block at the Apinto Government Hospital, renovation of the Tarkwa Midwifery School and the construction of health centres at Huniso and New Atuabo”

He stated that “In 2019, our Damang mine through the Foundation refurbished the Huni-Valley Health Centre at a cost of over one hundred and forty thousand US Dollars (US$140,000)”
Mr Osei-Bempa explained that “this has increased the capacity of the health centre, and I am delighted to learn that the OPD now caters for more patients, an average of 35 a day. This is a significant improvement from the daily average of 15 patients recorded prior to the upgrade of the facility”.

The member of parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency, Hon George Mireku Duker commended Goldfields Ghana for their continuous support towards the development of the Municipality.

He said the donation of the ambulances is as a result of a proposal he made to the company sometime ago to ensure smooth healthcare delivery in the Municipality.

While thanking Goldfields for not turning down any proposal he makes to the company for development, Hon Duker called on other companies in the Municipality to emulate what Goldfields is doing for their catchment communities.

Receiving the ambulances on behalf of the hospitals, the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Health Director, Mrs Caroline Otoo expressed her appreciation to Goldfields Ghana for their contribution towards healthcare in the Municipal.

She said the two ambulances will help improve health care delivery in the Municipality.
